The game of Canasta is one of the most popular forms of Rummy that has been played for decades and continues to draw in new players every year. You can often find many different variations of the game depending on where you choose to play, but as new players, you should consider learning how to play the game on Rummy Royal. The game of Canasta can be played by 2 – 6 players and the main objective of the game is to be the first player to earn 8500 points (or the highest score predetermined by the players). The game will be played in rounds in which each single player takes a turn at playing. Each turn will consist of two moves: the player must first draw a card. Players can choose to draw a card from either the stock pile or the discard pile based on what will better their hand. If the player draws from the discard pile, they must be able to use the card immediately in order to create a meld. Also when choosing this option the player will also be required to take any cards that were placed on the discard pile after the card they needed was placed there. The second move will require the same player to discard a single card from their hand before the turn will move onto the next player. The card that is discarded should hold little to no value to the player’s hand.

In Canasta the value of each card will be measured differently by each player. A card may hold very high value to one player while it has no benefit to other players. In order for each player to successfully get rid of all of the cards in their hand they will need to meld them into a set which must contain at least three cards but can contain as many as seven. A set that contains seven cards is what is known as Canasta.

When compared to many of the Rummy game variations, the card sequences that must collect in this particular game is a bit different than most others. All of the cards in the game with the exception of jokers, 3’s and 2’s are known as “natural” cards. The jokers and 2’s are known as “wild” cards and can be used to replace any of the natural cards in any set (three wild cards are the maximum amount allowed) while the 3’s are collected on the side will play a big role in the calculation of any points that will be given to players at the end of the Canasta game.

Any set that contains natural cards will be referred to as a natural Canasta (a set that is made up of all ace’s or sevens hold special value). A set that consists of only wild cards is a wild Canasta while a set that contains a mixture of natural cards and wild cards are referred to as a mixed Canasta.  The game will end when at least one player has successfully melded all of the cards in their hand or if there are no more cards in the stock pile for players to use. Regardless of how the game ends, each player will then receive points based on the cards that are left on their hand which will also take into account the amount of melds that each player has created during the game as well as the melds that that did not consist of 7 cards and the amount of 3’s that were collected.
