How to play Seven Card Stud Hi Lo poker game

When playing the game of Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, you will soon learn that it’s very similar to Seven Card Stud and is played as a variation compared to Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo. This particular game is technically a demanding poker game in which the best traditional high hand and the best low hand ace to five will split the pot once the showdown round appears. In this game all players will each be dealt 7 cards throughout the entire hand but can only use 5 of them to make the best possible poker hand which will determine the winner of each hand.

 

In Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo your low hand must consist of an 8 or lower to qualify. This means that the low hand must have 5 different cards that hold the value of 8 or lower in order to win the low portion of the hand. The lowest hand is determined in the exact same way as when playing Omaha Hi/Lo. If for some reason there is no qualifying low hand, the entire pot will be taken by the player or players who have the highest hand. This is always determined by the dealer but since on the computer it’s automated, you don’t have to worry about trying to figure everything out for yourself.

 

It’s imperative when playing Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo that you pay attention to your hand so you don’t throw away a winning hand. Most people who play poker are used to folding their hand if they do not have a great starter and high hand but in this case the worst hand may be the winning hand. The game uses the ace to five for the low ranking hands. Flushes and straights do not count against any hand and aces will always be low so the best possible low hand would be ace, two, three, four five also referred to as the wheel.

 

 

 

There are different Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo hand combinations that would be considered low hands, starting with the best low hand and going to the worst. Make sure that your low hand is always ranked from the highest card down. Below are a few different sequences which could qualify as the best low hand giving you 50% of the entire pot if there are only two players in the show down.

2. 6, 4, 3, 2, A

3. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2

4. 7, 5, 4, 3, 2

5. 7, 6, 5, 2, A

6. 7, 6, 5, 4, 2

7. 8, 4, 3, 2, A

8. 8, 6, 4, 2, A

9. 8, 7, 6, 5, 3

10. 8, 7, 6, 5, 4

 

Keep in mind that when playing Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, flushes and straights will not count against your low hand which makes a low flush or straight a qualifying hand. However, even though it does not count against your low hand, a flush or straight can also be a powerful high hand so it’s possible to take the entire pot with a wheel or flush. A winning hand that takes the entire pot for both high hand and low hand is often referred to as a scoop. Before the Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo game begins, you will be required to pay an ante which is a small portion of what the max blind is. The person who has the lowest exposed card will be the “bring in” and will need to start the action. After the betting is complete a fourth card will be dealt face up for everyone to see and once everyone has their fourth card the person with the highest exposed cards will start the action. This is the exact opposite of what took place the hand before. Again the hand will be followed by a fifth card which again will be placed face up on the table and will be followed by betting. The player who has the highest exposed hand will bet first followed by the additional players.

 

In Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo you will also have a sixth card that will be exposed and again followed by a round of betting before the seventh card (river card) is dealt and will reveal the ultimate winner of the hand which is referred to as the show down. Once the last cards are revealed, there will be a high hand that will earn at least 50% of the entire pot. The other half will go to the player that has the lowest hand unless there isn’t one and then the entire pot would go to the high hand. Not all rounds will have a high hand.
