Gin Rummy is a very special and attractive rummy game that follows the basic rules of all the other rummy games but which has some interesting particularities. This great game has a long history and it seems that the name of this game came from the favorite drink of the inventor. Sounds pretty funny, don’t you think?
Gin Rummy is a very simple game that can be played like all the other rummy games between 2-4 players by using one single deck of cards (54 cards) without Jokers.
The special thing about this rummy game is that it has two objectives:
A player must get rid of all the cards from the hand by forming sequences of sets and runs onto the melding zone in order to win the game.
A player must lower the amount of deadwood to a minimum. More exactly, you have to know that the deadwood cards represent the cards that can’t be melded into sets and runs on the table.
These are the major objectives that a Gun Rummy player must pursue in order to win the game.
From now on, the player must follow the rules that are similar to the basic rules of all the rummy games. A player must draw a card, form a meld (if it’s possible) and throw a card onto the discard pile.
The Gin Rummy game can end in the following ways:
Gin – when you lay down on the table all of your cards in melds, except one last card that must be thrown into the knock zone.
Knock – when you lay down on the table valid melds and have deadwood cards with a value that is lower or equal to ten. Also, a card must me thrown into the knock zone.
Undercut – when you knock, your opponents can add cards to your melds (only to your original melds). You must know that if one of your opponents manages to end the game with a lower value of deadwood cards than you, he will win by undercut and you, as a knocker, will receive 25 penalty points.
